0120. Pedro Jose Gamboa (1732-1802)

Pedro Jose Gamboa is the earliest man in the Gamboa line who can be documented.  According to his death record, he was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon around 1732, though such records are notoriously inaccurate. Based on the ages of his children, the date of his birth may have been a decade or two later.

His only known wife was Ana Maria San Miguel, parents unknown. She was named in the christening records of their children, and in his death record. No marriage record for the couple has ever been found, but they married before 1783, based on the age of their oldest documented child, and possibly as early as 1777 if their other potential child is taken into account.

From the locations of christening records for their children, it seems they lived in Monterrey until about 1788, then moved to the area of Burgos in Tamaulipas, where he raised his family and spent the last years of his life. It is assumed that he had been living at a place called Rancho Nuevo, where he was living at the time of his son Adriano Nasario’s death in 1793 and where he died and was buried in December of 1802.

Little else is know of Pedro. He was referred to as a “mestiso” in records, as were some of his children, with a son Francisco described as “de calidad indio,” which might be interpreted as meaning that he lived as a settled indigenous person, though he might not have been fully native. In any case, it is clear that the family were of mixed European and indigenous ancestry.

Children and grandchildren of Pedro Gamboa & Ana Maria San Miguel:

Maria Onorata Gamboa (possible) b.c. 1778, m. bef. 1793 to Vicente Torres. No documents tie her to this family group, but she is the right age and in roughly the right place, with no other possible parents. She had three children:

  • Maria Estefana Torres b. bef. 1793, m. 11 Sep 1808 to Guadalupe Ozuna in Burgos. Parents named in marriage record.
  • Jose Tomas Torres b. 1793 in Burgos, d. December 1793 in Burgos. Death record gives age and names of parents.
  • Jose Miguel Torres b.c. 1794, m. 11Nov 1815 to Maria Guadalupe Trevino in Burgos. Parents named in marriage record.

Jose Adriano Gamboa b.c. 1783 in Monterrey, m. 1803 in Burgos to Maria Felipa Espino. His parents were named in his marriage record. Nothing else is known about him, and he had no known children.

Jose Nasario Gamboa b. 26 July 1784 in Monterrey. His parents were named in his christening record on 07 Aug 1784 There is also a second baptism for a child named Jose Nasario Gamboa with the same parents about a year later on 05 August 1785. It is not clear if these are for the same or two different sons. Nothing else is known about him/them.

Jose Adriano Nasario Gamboa b. 1785, d. July 1793 in Burgos. Parents named in his death record. Possibly the same person as Nasario, who was born at the right time for that to be the case.

Maria Locadia Gamboa b. 1786 in General Teran, N.L., m. (1) Pedro Martinez, m. (2) 20 Mar 1827 to Jose Patricio de la Cruz, d. Feb 1831 in Burgos. Her parents were named in her christening record. She had no known children.

Jose Francisco Gamboa b.c. 1788 in Monterrey, m. 14 May 1807 to Maria Crisanta Sanchez in Burgos. His parents, age, and birthplace were given in his marriage record. He had four documented children and three other possible daughters:

  • Maria Dionisia Gamboa b. 1808 in Burgos, d. 3 Aug 1808 in Burgos. Parents named in death record.
  • Maria Fecunda Gamboa b.c. 1809 in Burgos, m. (1) 12 Jun 1826 to Jose Tomas Gutierrez in Burgos, m. (2) 23 Apr 1832 to Jose Encarnacion Palacios in Burgos. Her parents were named in her first marriage record.
  • Jose Luis Gamboa b.c. 1812, m. 7 Feb 1837 to Maria Barbara Rodriguez in Burgos. His parents were named in the christening records of his children in Matamoros.
  • Maria Antonia Gamboa (possible) b.c. 1817, m. (1) 27 Jan 1834 to Jose Guadalupe Cantu in Burgos, m. (2) 28 Feb 1847 to Asencio Alvarado in Burgos, d. 28 Feb 1847 at La Vaqueria, Burgos. Her parents are not named. She is placed in this family because she lived on the same ranch, La Vaqueria, as other children of Francisco.
  • Maria Valentina Gamboa (possible) b.c 1822, m. 10 Jul 1840 to Torivio Perez in Burgos. Parents not named in any records.
  • Maria Carmen Gamboa (possible) b.c. 1828, m. 8 Oct 1844 to Teofilo Salas in Burgos. Parents not named in any records. Nothing else is known about her.
  • Enocencio Gamboa b.c. 1825 at La Vaqueria, Burgos, m. 19 May 1845 to Maria Antonia Car in Linares, N.L.. Parents named in marriage record.

Jose Luis Gamboa b. 24 July 1788 in Monterrey. His parents were named in his christening record. He may be the same person as Francisco above, since their birth years match and the name Luis was common among Francisco’s descendants.

Jose Nicolas Gamboa b.c. 1790, m. July 1813 to Maria Monica Cienfuegos in Burgos. His parents were named in his marriage record. He had six documented children and one other possible daughter:

  • Juan Jose Gamboa b. bef. Nov 1816, d. November 1816 in Burgos. Parents named in death record.
  • Maria Antonia Gamboa (possible) Same person as the possible daughter of Franciso above. Her parents are unclear, and she could fit into either family chronologically.
  • Maria Catarina Gamboa b. 13 Mar 1820 in Burgos, d. 21 Mar 1820 in Burgos. Parents named in death record.
  • Maria Dolores Gamboa m. 26 Jun 1846 to Alejo de los Reyes in Burgos. Parents named in marriage record.
  • Quiterio Gamboa m. 21 Oct 1859 to Mariquita Sarmiento in Burgos. Parents named in mariage record.
  • Maria Julia Gamboa b.c February 1834, d. 17 Jul 1834. Parents named in death record.
  • Julian Gamboa m. June 1855 to Maria Julia Sarmiento in Burgos. Parents named in death record.

Maria Eugenia Gamboa (aka Eufemia) b.c. 1793, m. 17 August 1816 to Jose Victoriano Hernandez in Burgos. Her parents were named in her marriage record. She had four known children:

  • Bernardino Hernandez (aka Alvino) m. 3 Jun 1853 to Maria Agapita Reyes in Burgos. Parents named in marriage record.
  • Eugenio Hernandez b. 1837 in Linares, N.L.. Parents named in christening record. Nothing else is known about him.
  • Florencio Hernandez m. 9 May 1856 to Maria Francisca Reyes in Burgos. arents named in christening record.
  • Maria Paula Hernandez m. 21 Sep 1845 to Jose Serafin Vega in General Teran, N.L.. Parents named in christening record.

Of Pedro’s documented children, only Francisco, Nicolas, and Eugenia had known descendants. (His possible daughter Onorata also had three children.) The two sons, Francisco and Nicolas, each had two sons, from whom descend most of the Gamboas I am aware of in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Additional Comments

Given Pedro’s age at the birth of his first child (51), he seems to have married Ana fairly late in life. So it is possible that he had a previous wife about whom nothing is known. The daughter Onorata, if she was actually his daughter, could have been from a previous marriage, since she is about five years or more older than the first of Pedro & Ana’s documented children, who were all born very neatly in a time span of just ten years (1783 to 1793). On the other hand, Pedro & Ana may have married earlier than the ages of their known children suggest, and had other children who remain undiscovered.

Other than the christenings of his children and his death, no other records for Pedro have been found in Monterrey or elsewhere, and exhaustive searching in that area and neighboring states has turned up few leads on the identity of his parents. Given his very early birth date and the lack of permanent surnames at that time, especially in indigenous communities, Pedro may be the earliest man in the Gamboa family ever to be found.
