0031. Antonia Car (1827-1866)

Maria Antonia Car was the daughter of Jose Enrique Car and Maria Antonia Mireles. According to her marriage record, she was born about 1827 in Linares, Nuevo Leon, though no christening record has ever been found for her there. She appears to have been raised in that town as well until she married Enocencio Gamboa in 1845 at age 18. They may have known each other for many years already, since the parents of both Antonia & Enocencio married in Burgos and lived on the ranch called La Vaqueria, both their families eventually moving to Linares.

Antonia and Enocencio remained in Linares at least through 1850, when son Eugenio was baptized there. Then some time before 1866, they moved to Matamoros, Tamps. on the US border, where their last known child, Romualdo, was baptized. It is likely that they moved for work reasons. The town underwent a large economic boom during the early 1860s due to the American Civil War and served as the main port for the Confederacy.

There are only three contemporary records for Antonia or Enocencio, all mentioned above, and their later lives are a mystery. It is unknown where or when Antonia died, but chances are it was in one of the towns where their descendants settled: Matamoros & Brownsville and Reynosa & Edinburg. So far, there has been no focused search for her death record, but since Mexico had both Catholic church and civil death records by that time, at least one and possibly even two documents might exist. Her daughters lived very long lives, and it would be interesting to discover whether they inherited this trait from their mother.

Children and Grandchildren of Enocencio Gamboa & Antonia Car

  • Ynocensio Gamboa b. 04 Jul 1904, m.(1) (possible) 1923 to Ruperta Dios in Hidalgo County, TX. An Ynocencio Gamboa was baptized in Reynosa on 14 Sep 1906, with the only parent listed as Francisca Gamboa. Possibly he is this person. Francisca would have been in her 50s when he was born; so it is possible that he was actually the child of one of the Gamboa daughters.

Eugenio Gamboa b. 1850 in Linares. Parents named in his christening record. No further information.

Susana Gamboa b. 23 Mar 1850, m. bef. 1871 to Jesus Juarez, d. 3 Apr 1930 in Gonzales County, Texas. Her parents are named in the 1874 Matamoros christening record of her daughter Guadalupe and in her death certificate. She had 8 known children:

  • Marcial Juarez, 25 Oct 1880 in Mexico, m. 25 Oct 1909 to Beatrice Ramas in Gonzales County, TX, d. 27 Jul 1962 in Galveston, TX. Parents named in death certificate.

  • Pedro Juarez b. 16 Sep 1895 in Texas, d. 9 May 1968 in Dallas, TX. Parents named in death certificate.
  • Antonio Juarez b.c. 1897, d. 8 Sep 1970 in Alvin, Brazoria County, TX. Parents named in christening record. His age differs significantly (21 years) from the Antonio Juarez baptized in 1876. This might be a second son named Antonio.

Maria Yldefonsa Gamboa b.c. 1860, m. (1) bef. 1878 to Catarino Rosales, m. (2) (not married) bef. 1882 to Crispin Hernandez, d. 28 Sep 1960 in Corpus Cristi, Texas. Her father was named in her death certificate, and both her parents were named in the christening records of her daughters Candelaria Hernanez and Teodora Hernandez. She is thought to have had at least two children with her first husband, Catarino Rosales:

  • Senon Rosales b. 24 Jun 1877 in Mexico, m.bef. 1904 to Apolinaria, d. 03 Mar 1975 in Richmond, Fort Bend, TX. Mother only named in death certificate.
  • Nicanor Rosales (aka Delgado, aka Rodriguez) b.bef. 18 Apr 1880 in Reynosa, Tamps.. Parents names given in christening record.

And she had two known daughters out of wedlock with Crispin Hernandez:

  • Candelaria Hernandez. Parents’ and grandparents’ names given in her christening record.
  • Teodora Hernandez b. 12 Nov 1885 in Matamoros, m.c 1909 to Pablo Garcia Ramirez in Hidalgo County, TX, d. 25 Apr 1918 in Edinburg, Hidalgo County, TX. Parents and grandparents (incorrectly) named in her christening record. Mother’s full name and father’s surname given in Texas death certificate.

Romualdo Gamboa b. 1866 in Matamoros, possibly the person who m. (1) 25 Nov 1885 in Cameron County, TX to Rosa Castillo, divorced bet. 1900-1910, m. (2) bef. 1910 (common law) to Paz Hinojosa in Tamaulipas, d. aft. 1930, possibly in Mexico. (He was listed as the head of his household in the 1930 Mexican census in Tamaulipas.) Parents named in his christening record.  He is not tied to any possible wives through direct documentary evidence, but it is likely that he is the person who maried Rosa & later Paz. Assuming this Romualdo is the man she married, he is known to have had at least 5 children with his first wife, Rosa Castillo:

  • Martina Gamboa b. 26 Nov 1886 in Texas, m. 05 Mar 1910 to Amado Serna in Cameron County, TX, d. 16 Jan 1965 in Brownsville, Cameron County, TX. Parents named in death certificate.
  • George Gamboa b. 22 Jun 1891 at El Mesquite Rancho, Texas, m.bef. 1914 to Angela Sanchez, d. 06 Oct 1951 in Brownsville, Cameron County, TX. Parents named in death certificate.
  • Juan or Juana Gamboa b.c. December 1890 in Texas. In Romaldo’s family in the 1900 census.
  • Rosa Gamboa b.c. May 1892 in Texas, m. 21 Jan 1911 in Cameron County, TX to Porfirio Garcia. Assumed to be the Rosa in Romualdo’s home in the 1910 census.
  • Santos Gamboa b.c. January 1897. In Romualdo’s household in 1910 census.

He also had at least one other child, probably by his common law second wife, Paz Hinojosa:

  • Luis Gamboa b.c. 1910 in Mexico, d. aft. 1930. In the home of his father in the 1930 census of Mexico.
