Eli Wilmot – 1870 Banks Co Census

Banks County, Georgia
1870 Census

Wilmot, Eli T, 61, M, W, value of real estate 900, value of personal property 550, New York

“, Harriet E, 22, F, W
“, Sorillia J, 5
“, Eli J, 2
“, Harriet A, 3/12, b Feb
“, Souson (or Loreson?), 14, F, Mulato

His near neighbor was:

Wilmot, James, 70, M, B, farm laborer, GA
“, Jefferson, 16, M, B
“, Jacob, 8, M, B
Landers, Lealy(?), 14, F, B
Griffin (or Gillespie?), Sophronia, 18, F, B

NOTE: Harriet was Eli’s second wife, and the three young children were hers with him. The mulatto girl was a servant, probably a former slave. Her white father is unknown, of course.

NOTE: James was probably living on Eli Wilmot’s property and probably a former slave of Eli. He fits well as the oldest male slave in Eli’s household in 1850 and 1860. It is not clear which children were his, though most of them could have been, or possibly his grandchildren. Some of the children were listed as mulatto, which brings their parentage into even greater question. Jefferson was seen in a later census living as a border as an older man. He was described as having a “private income.”
