Hi Cous,

Nice listing here. After looking at your parternal lines, we have so many common ancestors, I'm surprised we're not first cousins! LOL

Wheelers, Jordans, Camps, and probably around twenty or good many more other names that I recognised right off the bat from around Habersham, Stephens, Elbert and Franklin county GA areas.

What lead me to finding your site is I was looking for the parentage of one of my great grandmothers, Mary Ann Walters, whom married John Wiley "Jack" Camp. I hail down that one line through Harberts, Jordans to Ramseys. The other name I'm looking for that were associated with that line was Dukes, with James Dennis Harbert and Peobe (Ferba)Duke, who that great grandmother I'll be looking for in the Camp neighborhood also.

Have spent serval years now, tracking down those lines and photographing their graves in northern Georgia. You should be about like me now, related to everyone in Habersham county and half of Stephens. LOL

Keep up the good work,

Allen

Dear Mr. Wilmot,

The strangest thing, I am of Mexican descent and my great-grandfather's last name was also Wilmot. I recently moved to Virginia for new emplyoment, and was pleased to find out that I may have, in a roundabout way, come back "full circle."

Great work. How did you get all this data on line? I did find some of my family in your records. I am not sure how to publish my information and your way looks great. I have Cantu, Serna, de Leon etc in my family. Starr county is what drew me to your site, my husbands Gonzalez and Flores line were in that area and in Duval County. Good Look.

Mr. Wilmot,
My parents (Francisca Moreno Rios and Leobardo Cantu Arredondo) are from the Montemorelos and Caderyta, Nuevo Leon area. I've searched for information on both families for many years with no luck. I can truly appreciate the work that you do and know how much effort you put into transcribing the information. I'm grateful for your kind thoughtfulness in sharing your hard work with others. Beautiful!

Happy searching! Noelle

If No. 142 John Hooper is John Word Jones Hooper, his father is Johnson Monroe Hooper who married Berenice Green Chatham. I don’t know other Hooper siblings. I have 2 more generations of Hoopers; am willing to share.
My gf was Elroy Levert Hooper from Edinburg, MS

John, Thank you for posting this. We are having our family reunion in July 2008 and you have provided more information than I had.
My great-great grandfather was Donaciano Serda. My great grandfather was Encarnacion Serda, Sr. My grandfather was Encarnacion Serda, Jr. My father spells Serda as is where most of his brothers and sisters spell it Cerda.
We had a family reunion for the descendants of Donaciano and Lorenzita back in June 29, 2002 and they spelled their last name Cerda.
I found the 1880 Census with Donaciano's name spelled Serda.

Comment on Salazar – 1870 Hidalgo Co Census by John Wilmot

I'm afraid that I know only a little bit about the Ochoas and nothing about the Salazars, and none of the people you mentioned is in my database. My best suggestion would be to first go through the census to find parents or relations -- 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930. You should also check the death certificates in Hidaldo County, which usually give parents names, though they only begin in 1920. If your ancestors were known to have married in Hidalgo County, another option is to visit or mail a query to the Catholic Archives of Texas in Austin, who have the records for the diocese of Brownsville (which included Hidalgo Co) before the 1920s. If you mail a query for something like a marriage, for example, it will cost you about $5 for each one, but they will search, copy, and translate the record for you. Some people had a civil marriage in Hidalgo, but no church wedding, in which case the Catholic Archives will have no record of them, but they'll still charge you for the search. On the other hand, it's free to visit the library and do the research yourself.

The period when you are searching (the 1800s along the Texas-Mexico border) is kind of difficult because most of people were still baptized over in Mexico, usually Reynosa, and the Mormon Family History Centers do not have microfilms of those records. The only place I know of where you can find copies of the Reynosa records is at the University of Texas Pan American library (in Edinburg) in the Lower Rio Grande Historical Collection (It's on the ground floor last time I was there.) I don't think the church in Reynosa itself owns copies of the records. So this may really be the only place. Unfortunately, none of the records, nor even an index, is available online. Here is a link to the special collection's page:

If you cannot make it to Edinburg, I have found other researchers on the Hidalgo Co message board at Rootsweb.com who can do limited searches in the Reynosa records. However, you will need to provide them with specific names usually. That's where it helps to have already gone through the census or tried the Catholic Archives.

If you were looking for general information about the families, I can only suggest posting queries on surname specific message boards at Rootsweb. I have found that families in Hidalgo have usually lived there many generations and know a little about the recent history. I know the Ochoas have been there since the 1850s or 1860s at least.

In case you have never seen this, here is more about the cememtery at Abram (aka Ojo de Agua), which at least mentions some early Ochoas and gives a little background about the community.
