About This Blog

WHY
This blog was created simply to share the many notes and documents I gather in the course of my personal research, much of which turns out to be unrelated to my own ancestry. Since they would otherwise be sitting in a file folder, I’m hoping that posting them here instead will help others along.

WHAT
My goal is to transcribe directly into this blog as I work, with an emphasis on presenting documents. It is not meant to be a finished genealogy of any particular family.

HOW
I aim to make this easily searchable by location, surname, source, and LDS film & batch numbers. Theoretically you will be able to click a category at right to see everything I have on that.

WHO
My name is John Wilmot, of course. My paternal ancestors were English and Scotish immigrants to colonial Virginia, with later generations migrating to northeast Georgia. My maternal ancestors were Spanish, African, and Meso-American indiginous peoples who migrated to the northern Mexican frontier states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas, eventually settling to Hidalgo County, Texas. I research my direct ancestors and their children & grandchildren only, up to the original immigrant to the “New World.”

  1. Dear Mr. Wilmot,

The strangest thing, I am of Mexican descent and my great-grandfather’s last name was also Wilmot. I recently moved to Virginia for new emplyoment, and was pleased to find out that I may have, in a roundabout way, come back “full circle.”

    :)
